Greenwood College Expansion

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Greenwood College School, a leader amongst Toronto’s secondary-school institutions, is a grade-7-to-12 private day school with a community of 500 students and over 90 educators. Originally constructed in 2002, Graham oversaw the 2016 renovation and expansion of 70,000-square-feet of institutional space at its Mount Pleasant Road location. Graham’s intervention enhances and expands the scopes of pedagogy: a state-of-the-art science lab opens onto a green roof; a new gymnasium with retractable bleachers doubles the students’ athletic potential; and a performance wing offers a plethora of artistic opportunities, accommodating a set-and-costume-fabrication studio, a dance studio, a soundproof music room, and a video-editing suite.

This seemingly simple project turned out to be quite challenging, with 80% of the design changing in the four months preceding the “go-live” date! Additionally, $8 million worth of design changes were added, including the removal and replacement of an asbestos containing roof.

The Graham team managed to plan their work strategically, working 20 hours daily, 7 days a week and met the original Amazon “go-live” date of September 15th, 2021 completing all the base contract and the additional changes on schedule.
