University of Saskatchewan Academic Health Sciences Building D Wing Addition

Location: Saskatoon, SK

This project was a fixed-price general contract that involved the construction of an 18,600-square metre (200,200 square-foot) building. The project consisted of new construction — including a six-storey addition, basement, and utility — and approximately 2,200 square metres (23,700 square feet) of renovations at the interface with the existing Academic Health Sciences B Wing.

The D Wing addition includes: wet and dry research laboratory space for students and faculty; large open labs with associated lab support rooms such as dark rooms, tissue culture rooms, equipment rooms and microscopy suites; numerous procedure rooms and surgical suites; offices adjacent to the lab areas for faculty, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows; one six-storey atrium and two smaller atria that provide natural sunlight; and collaborative/interactive spaces to maximize “academic collisions.” The labs and research areas are also supported by a 25,800 square foot vivarium that will be home to approximately 5,000 rodents and other small animals required for research purposes. The fifth floor infrastructure is flexible and capable of responding to the changing requirements of teaching and research and will be developed in the future as needed.
