Red Deer Water Treatment Plant Intake Buildings & Screen Upgrades

Location: Red Deer, AB

The project consisted of upgrades to the existing water treatment plants raw water supply. Work included construction and removal of a temporary coffer dam to install a new wedge type bank intake; a new mechanical screen building with a pumped fish return system; modifications and tie-ins to the existing facility as well as extensive gabion wall system and bank reclamation.

Following the installation of the coffer dam, work focused on completing the intake structure and lower portion of the screens building. With underground utility and concrete work completed ahead of schedule, the project team worked with an environmental consultant to identify a window for in-stream construction and successfully applied for early removal of the coffer dam. The early removal allowed for completion of the river and bank construction activities and eliminated the risk of ice jambs and flooding due to the narrowing of the river by the coffer dam.
