Horizon Credit Union Centre (Melville Communiplex)

Location: Melville, SK

The Horizon Credit Union Centre involved the construction a new 5,806 sqm (62,500 sqft) multiplex for the community of Melville. It includes a 1,700-seat NHL-sized arena, a 500-seat convention centre, administrative and support areas, a walking track, and a family fitness and cardiac care space.

The building was designed with the ice level at grade for easy access into the facility and the change rooms. The shell was constructed utilizing the cost efficiencies of a single slope building with open web roof joists that conceal the mechanical ducting and increase the clear heights throughout the building. The exterior shell utilized an insulated metal panel that was thermally broken from the structural steel for the roof and the walls. The ice surface was constructed on a granular structure thermally broken utilizing rigid insulation and fastening clips that adhere the insulation to the concrete slabs.

Natural light is brought into the facility at the main entrance to induce a welcoming atmosphere. This involved careful design consideration, to ensure that the bright light would not affect the arena area or obstruct the views of the fans.

The feature stairs leading to the second level are designed to handle large crowds during intermissions, and an elevator was added for accessibility. Interior finishes utilized durable materials such as concrete and masonry, with the floors receiving slip-resistant finishes that are aesthetically pleasing and low maintenance.
