University of Saskatchewan Academic Health Sciences Building – A&C Wing Renovation

Location: Saskatoon, SK

This project involved the demolition and renovation of an 8,817 m2 (approx. 95,000 ft2) historical building over 21 months. Work consisted of the full demolition, asbestos abatement, and renovation of 4 storeys above grade and one storey below grade of the A Wing and C Wing sections of the Academic Health Sciences Building at the University of Saskatchewan.

The 1950’s-era building is part of the multi-wing complex that originally held offices, classroom space, common areas, meeting rooms, and the morgue. The newly renovated space was converted to offices and meeting rooms, as well as the new morgue.

The renovation included the replacement of the existing roof, removal of the existing elevator and installation of a new accessible elevator, installation of new windows into the existing tyndall stone building envelope, hard landscaping at the front of the building and rebuilding the front stone steps, levelling existing floors for new construction and structurally reinforcing existing floors, and new steel stud construction with new energy efficient heating and cooling systems via chilled beams. Re-pointing of the tyndall stone in areas affected by construction were also performed to provide a seamless finish that did not comprise the historical appearance of the building.
