Student Association MacEwan University – SAMU
Location: Edmonton, AB
The SAMU Building is a three-storey building addition and renovation to the interface, connected to the west side of MacEwan University’s Sport & Wellness Centre. It is bordered by 104th Avenue to the south, 109th Street to the west and an existing surface parking lot to the north. The project occupies university-owned land, currently functioning as MacEwan University’s naturalized planting area.
The SAMU Building has consolidated the operations of the Student Association of MacEwan University onto the City Centre Campus centralized location. The functional spaces within the building include student, club, event, food & retail, office, support and other spaces. The building measures approximately 5044 sq. m in gross area, distributed over three storeys, with a structural concrete slab on grade, supported by bored cast in place concrete belled piles. Several piles and associated columns were installed within the footprint of the Sport & Wellness building. A drilling rig modified for work in low headroom was required followed by reinstatement of the existing structure and finishes.
The building was recently awarded LEED® Gold, minimum, and will utilize a number of sustainable features. These include, but are not limited to high-performance curtain walls, access to natural daylight and energy-efficient fixtures.
