On Monday, January 11, 2021, the new secondary school in New Westminster, BC officially opened its doors to students and staff. Graham was the design-builder of this impressive $78 million facility. At the time of the project announcement, it was the largest single school investment in the province’s history.
The new school provides a state-of-the-art learning environment for 1,900 students and 200 staff. It is designed to optimize flexible learning spaces, maximizing collaboration and active learning and includes technology to enrich the learning process. Multi-purpose spaces and modern shops, as well as contemporary fine and performing arts spaces enhance the environment for the school community. The school also meets today’s standards for modern learning, safety and accessibility, and incorporate the latest sustainable energy and waste management systems.
The school includes a 1,720 m2 gymnasium with three full basketball courts, a 272-seat theatre, a full commercial kitchen, band/choir/recording studies, a dedicated dance room, a black box theater (mini theatre with no fixed seats), modern shops and technical education spaces (wood, metal, arts, home economics), eight science rooms, and 60 general classrooms, as well as many multipurpose/flexible learning spaces.
This is the only high school in New Westminster, BC, and to-date is the largest high school in BC.
