New Westminster Secondary School

Working with the New Westminster School District, and partner KMBR Architects Planners, Graham led the delivery of the largest single school investment in BC Ministry of Education history.
The new school provides a state-of-the-art learning environment for 1,900 Grade 9 to 12 students and is designed to optimize the use of flexible learning spaces to maximize collaboration and active learning and to include technology that enriches the learning process.
Multi-purpose spaces and modern shops, as well as contemporary fine and performing arts spaces enhance the environment for the school community. It also meets today’s standards for modern learning, safety and accessibility, and incorporates the latest sustainable energy and waste management systems.
The LEED Gold facility which covers 236,000 sq. ft. includes an 18,500 sq. ft. gymnasium, 272-seat theatre plus a mini or “black box” theatre, full commercial kitchen, band / choir / recording studios, dedicated dance room, fully equipped tech-ed and shop spaces, eight science rooms including an engineering lab, 60 general classrooms, many multipurpose/flexible learning spaces, a wellness centre, welcoming centre, a library and an Indigenous Friendship Centre.
The new school was constructed adjacent to the old operational New Westminster Secondary School which remained fully operational throughout construction.
