Fort Hills Secondary Extraction Deep Underground Piping

Location: Fort McMurray, AB

As part of the Suncor Fort Hills Oil Sands Mine Project, Graham was engaged in the early tailings and secondary extraction system construction programs. Utilizing our large-scale mining support fleet and underground piping teams, we installed the early stages of the South Pit tailings system and over 11,000 lm of HDPE pipe connecting the Secondary Extraction Silo of the Central Processing Facility.

The project, consisting of the first three subcontracts in Canada for SK Group of Korea, provided a strong start for their $3.8 Billion Secondary Extraction Silo at Fort Hills. The project consisted of site pioneering, stripping and stockpiling topsoil, rough grading (cut, fill, contouring and compacting), construction and final grading of plant roads, drainage ditches, installation of over 10 km of large diameter HDPE and carbon steel deep underground piping, installation of culverts, and the construction of a stormwater pond. Graham’s engagement was critical in starting the project successfully for a firm (SK Group) that had never worked in Canada’s harsh climate before.
