ENMAX Arc Flash Mitigation Program

Location: Calgary, AB

This project involved the construction of five new electrical Substations in Calgary – Substation No. 09, 13, 16, 23, and 28 – to meet the new Arc Flash Mitigation guidelines. Specifically, the major components of the project included demolition of existing / obsolete infrastructure – including salvaging parts of the old equipment – installation of deep services or tanks depending on site conditions, construction of new buildings to house the new Arc Flash Resistant Switchgear, modifications to Substation yards to tie in new switchgear, addition of required station service transformers, incorporation of automatic transfer switches, protection and control systems, AC & DC Distribution Systems, and ENMAX’s information management system installations.

Graham successfully managed these high-risk sites, and the client’s stringent requirements, delivering all five substations on schedule and becoming one of ENMAX’s preferred contractors. Safety is the main priority within the live high voltage environments, and Graham has gained a thorough understanding of ENMAX’s operational requirements. Finally, Graham ensured that there were no service interruptions to the network throughout the cutover and energization process as customer service and satisfaction was noted as a key indicator of success for ENMAX.
