Chilliwack Secondary School
Location: Chilliwack, British Columbia
Graham was awarded the Design-Build contract to demolish, design and construct a new 200,000 sf education facility including a secondary and distance education schools, and a community centre with a 1,200-student capacity with future expansion capability for up to 1,500 students.
The design incorporated a three-storey classroom and office block, with a separate one storey gymnasium, fine arts and industrial education shop wings. The focus of the design was to create a ‘campus’ feel within the building by consolidating like-minded classrooms near each other.
The LEED Gold facility was constructed on the existing secondary school site directly adjacent to the new school. As such the project was delivered in two phases:
- Phase one was the construction of the new Chilliwack Secondary School adjacent to the existing school.
- Phase two incorporated the demolition of said existing school and completion of the site work, including parking, landscaping and an artificial turf sports field.
To achieve the LEED Gold certification a number of sustainable features with a strong focus on energy efficiency, as well as the procurement of locally sourced materials that were highlighted in the design of the facility.
