Calgary Pedestrian Overpass Reaches Construction Milestone

September 4, 2024

Calgary, AB – Graham is excited to share progress on the 16th Avenue at 29th Street Pedestrian Overpass project.

In collaboration with the City of Calgary, Parsons, and our engineering and crane subcontractors, the project team successfully planned and executed the installation of a steel truss bridge. The truss, fabricated in Montana, was transported to the site in three segments. Over six weeks, it underwent fit-up, welding, and field coating in preparation for the bridge erection on August 21, 2024.

Weighing 150,000 lbs., the truss installation had to be completed within a tight four-hour window due to traffic restrictions. Utilizing two 200-ton cranes, the team executed a precise lift and placed the truss onto the bridge bearings, aligning it within millimeters of the surveyed location. Following the truss installation, 11 precast panels were installed over three night shifts.

The bridge is expected to open to the public in fall 2024, marking the completion of a complex and carefully orchestrated engineering feat.

About the Project

The bridge features a single-span structural steel frame with precast panels, including architectural handrails with embedded LED lighting, cast-in-place concrete ramps and stairs, as well as landscaping and pathway tie-ins.

The pedestrian bridge will provide a safe and accessible connection between essential medical facilities, transportation hubs, pathways, and new developments like the UXBorough development, spanning north and south over 16 Ave. NW (Trans-Canada Highway).
