Cathedral of the Holy Family
Location: Saskatoon, SK
This project involved the construction of a 6,038 sqm (65,000 sqft) cathedral for the Roman Catholic Parish of Holy Family in Saskatoon. The new cathedral is the focal point for Saskatoon’s Catholic Community.
The structural components included structural slab on void for the main floor, structural steel framing and hollowcore panels for the second floor, and an elaborate structural steel truss system above the main sanctuary that is open for viewing. Exterior finishes for the building are natural materials, such as Tyndall Stone for the main elevations, as well as an extensive use of glazing.
The Worship Space is approximately 1,393 sqm (15,000 sqft) with seating for 1,400, including a 100 member choir. It also houses an organ that was specially designed to fit the overall fabric of the Cathedral. The rest of the building consists of offices, meeting rooms, banquet facilities, living quarters, children’s liturgy, etc.
The design of the structural, HVAC, lighting and mechanical systems enables the building to conserve energy, reduce emissions and provide for greatly reduced operating costs. This project also included the development of a five acre site for parking and landscaping.
