Regional Distribution Centre

Location: Balzac, AB

This project comprised the Design-Build of a distribution facility for Target. Located north-east of Calgary, the 1.3-million-square-foot distribution centre was built within an 80-acre development site, 30 acres of which were occupied by the building structure. Extensive site work included underground utilities, concrete, lighting, heavy duty paving and roadworks, walks, curbs and gutters, irrigation, and landscaping.

The building included approximately 425 loading docks, and the distribution centre was divided into receiving east and west (500,000 square feet on each side) and a shipping wing of 300,000 square feet. The west side of the distribution centre was automated; for example, conveyors backed up to every loading dock on the west side to transport and sort product. There was also a depalletization area, automatically taking layers of boxes off the palates and using bar code readers for sorting.

Within the office area, the facility’s computer room was constructed with raised floors for precision cooling.

The scope of Graham’s work also included construction of a separate guard house, a water tank and pump building, a temporary power generator, and a storage yard.

This project was completed on schedule and under budget.
