Alberta Children’s Hospital Lot 1 Parkade Expansion
Location: Calgary, AB
The Alberta Children’s Hospital Lot 1 Parkade Expansion consisted of a two-level parking deck addition (totaling 173,000 square feet and 503 stalls) on top of an existing three-level parkade. The project was within the active Alberta Children’s Hospital site. The existing parkade – which is linked directly to the hospital – had to remain operational throughout construction. As such, the phasing plan, traffic management, site logistics, Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) measures, and public protection plan were all top priority.
Construction included the demolition of the existing roof, new cast-in-place parking deck, new steel galvanized roof, elevator expansion, traffic coating, signage and wayfinding, IT, mechanical and electrical, and renovations to the existing floors, including reconfiguration of accessibility. The exterior of the parkade includes curtainwall in the colors of the hospital.
Graham worked with the client, user groups, and subcontractors to develop a superstructure and sequence that provided minimal impact to the function and revenue of the operational parkade below. This involved formwork design innovations, design and integration of temporary signage, and a detailed shoring plan that allowed for minimal stall closures. Associated hoardings kept the public at a safe distance from any shoring and provided clear, safe pathways to access the hospital entrance.
